Computing Policies
SEU Policies
The St. Edward's Computing Policy applies in addition to any policies here.
In the event of any incompatibility between St. Edward's Computing Policy and the policy stated herein, the more restrictive policy has precedence.
Computer Science Computing Policies
General
- It is the USER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN and REMEMBER THIS INFORMATION.
- The use of SEU computing resources is a privilege. It is not a right.
- Be respectful of other users, lab equipment and area at all times in the computer labs.
- Each account is assigned to a single individual, who is responsible for all computer usage under that account. Sharing computer accounts is not permitted. Do not leave your computer logged in unattended. Activity that violates any SEU policy is the responsibility of the account's owner.
- Access to the computing resources at the SEU-CS labs is limited to current computer science SEU students, faculty and staff members with paid computer lab access. Visitors and other users may use the labs as part of officially sanctioned college events; all such access must be pre-approved by the computer science department head.
- To respect the privacy of other users, users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify data belonging to other users, or misrepresent others.
- By using any Computer Science computing resource, you agree to abide by this policy.
- Users of the computer labs must also abide by the SEU Academic Council Regulations, which are available from the Registrar's office.
Lab Policies
- The computer labs are heavily used facilities. Other users may consider computers unattended for more than 15 minutes available for use.
- All noise levels (include: talking, music, muffled headphone noise, etc) in the lab should be kept to a minimum so that others are not disturbed. The computer labs are to be used as a study environment.
- Users are to clean up the area around the computer they used as they leave. This includes making sure all removable storage is removed from the computer and any unwanted paper is placed in the recycle bin.
- Lab staff on duty will be available to advise users with computer problems and how to do computer related tasks, but are not responsible to assist with users' academic work or other user-related tasks. Under no circumstances should lab staff be responsible to perform computer work on the users' behalf.
- All Equipment in the computer labs is not to be removed, modified, relocated, or disassembled without prior permission from Lab Administrator.
- Recreational use of computers during busy times is not permitted. Example: Recreational web-surfing, recreational e-mail, chatting, games, etc. Any user involved in such usage must yield their computer to any user waiting to perform academic work.
- Problems with computer lab equipment are to be reported to the lab staff immediately.
- Computers are available to Students only during computer lab hours of operation and when no classes are scheduled in the room. The ACL lab hours are the same as the library's.
- Computers are available on a first come first serve bases.
Internet and Network Policies
- Internet access is provided for educational use, visiting sites (viewing or printing) of inappropriate nature or that may be considered offensive by other individuals is not considered acceptable use of this service at SEU .
- Sending/Posting harassing messages or repeatedly sending/posting unwanted messages (electronic or paper) to others is prohibited.
- You may not connect any personal computer equipment to the Computer Science network without prior authorization from the Lab Administrator.
- You may not attempt to intercept, analyze, record, or tamper with network data packets without prior approval from the Lab Administrator.
- SEU Computing Resources may not be used for illegal or disruptive purposes. Examples of illegal or disruptive purposes include, but are not limited to:
- Intentional harassment of other users.
- Intentional destruction of or damage to equipment, software, or data belonging to other users.
- Intentional disruption or unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications.
- Intentional denial of services to users
Using the computers
- The printers in the labs are intended to serve the individual-copy printing needs of lab users, not as a replacement for photocopy machines. Users who need to produce multiple copies of a document should print a master copy and then photocopy it. The library offers photocopying services.
- Excessive printing at once or over the course of the semester is not permitted.
- Any user who has not been trained by SEU Computing Services staff or otherwise authorized by the Lab Administrator, on the proper procedures for unjamming or otherwise maintaining printers are to request assistance from lab staff and NOT open or try to fix the printers.
- Reproduction of any copyrighted material (eg. software, music, video, books, photographs, etc) is prohibited and will be dealt with as according to copyright laws.
Storage of Personal Data
- Data stored in the Personal Storage Space will be deleted when your account expires. It is your responsibility to back up your data before your account expires.
- The department of computer science reserves the right to view or scan any data stored on communicated via the department's resources.
Penalties
- Any breach of this policy could result in punitive action, including (but not limited to) loss of computer privileges, deletion of your account, departmental action, applicable disciplinary action, and referral to the appropriate authorities.
